Only Bears Hibernate
Shot in the arm for those people
who dig quietly into davenports
and vegetate till winter passes
by Fashion Staff
wearables |
See America or see your doctor. Take your choice. If it's the
former, you will be among those wise souls who have learned
the easy secret
of
year-round fitness by taking their annual earned vacation during
the
mushy months of winter. Add up the score yourself. In the summer
with
five-day weeks and sunbasking week ends you are building yourself
up
against winter. Daylight-saving time lets you live longer days
out of
doors and even without a summer vacation you're more alert
in November
than in March after winter's ravages. Doesn't it make sense
to punctuate
your bleak winter existence with a stimulating vacation that
will keep
you over till spring rolls around? Get South in the sun or
North in
altitudes whee crisp dry sunlit winter air brushes away the
cobwebs of
routine and duty.
Casting aside the medical disguise and coming
out flatfootedly as
advisers on what you'll need to make your winter holiday complete
from a
wardrobe and impedimenta standpoint, we first refer you to
the following
pages where basic resort ( both North and South) outfits are
pictorialized. You don't quite yet sail for the brevity of
the Bermuda
suit of jacket and shorts? O.K., we won't argue You'll need,
however, a
lightweight suit and you ca;t do wrong on a natural shade such
as
Colonial Tan. You like the striped beach shirt but prefer more
neutral
slacks? It's your privilege to choose, but please choose a
lightweight,
washable fabric for your own comfort and satisfaction. You
may not have
the hip measurements of the tapered white-trunked bather depicted,
so
choose a tailored pair of swim shorts, but don't be drab about
them this
year or you'll be known as the "deacon-beacon" of
the beach club.
Javanese, Hawaiian, Indian patterns rule the shoreline today
and you'll
be far from a pioneer in colorful beachwear. Don't forget a
terry jacket
or a beach poncho of heavy toweling for comfort after a dip.
Be sure you
have sturdy sunglasses and a Book of the Month for lulls between
eyefuls
of Petty parades. Have a new camera at hand so you may crow
over
panchromatic prints around the office when you return. a camera
will not
suffer beach abuse if you're prepared with a waterproof, slide-fastened
beach bag for cigarettes, glasses, book, binoculars and plastic,
waterproof playing cards. Why not enjoy yourself? On that score
we'd
also recommend a portable radio in case you want to catch weather
reports on how the gang you left behind you are faring or if
you want to
keep posted for some reason or other on what your broker may
be brooding
over while you bask. It's always easy to get the time via radio
but
modern manufacture has also solved the wristwatch problem for
those who
lead lives near water by perfecting crystal contact and case
fitting to
a point where absent-minded professors may plunge without upsetting
the
precision works. Even at play a watch can be very handy at
times.
Night time in the South! Take a lightweight white jacket, tropical
dress
trousers, a soft collar-attached shirt, black bow and a white
puggree-banded coconut straw. Tropical nights are part of the
relaxation
and a blonde or brunette on left arm will blend if you're at
formal ease
under moonlight. While on the subject of evening wear the very
;latest
development is abbreviated pajamas, the trousers cut like shorts
and the
jacket only elbow length.
Headin' North? Then the secret of your comfort lies in the
foundations
upon which you build your apparel. Experience has proved that
silk and
wool as an insulation in the form of underwear is unbeatable
and best
preventive against bitter blasts. Cotton and wool, of course,
turns the
trick for a limited budget. Remember the secret of foot warmth
- silk
under, wool over. Most Northern Resort wear calls for trousers
that
allow no breeze. Knickers with long hose or ski trousers that
tuck into
boots are the only requisites. Glance over the accessories
noted above
for a Southern sojourn. Many of them apply to the snow climes
too.
Radio, sunglasses, book, camera, etc., are all-time passer
de rigueur.
Add to them a pipe, man's best companion when the mercury tends
to hide,
and flask from whose leather-covered interior comes a new lease
on life
when breath becomes frost. Instead of the beach bag, a snow
trail
follower finds a haversack haven in a waterproof knapsack that
slings
over the shoulder much in the same manner as a current London
man about
town totes a gas mask. Into this hip-hamper a sandwich, band-aid
and
brandy are tucked away and many a downhill pause may be brightened
by
its refreshing contents.
Don't overload when headed Arcticward. today's magic of manufacture
produces featherweight fabrics of tightly woven cotton that,
when wind,
wet and weatherproofed and snugly slide-fastened, form protection
as
jackets that defy ninety-mile gales with a modicum of bulk.
Take a
gander at your leather before you head North - or South. Shoes,
luggage
and gloves will see either salt air or snow abuse. Treat these
leather
with a sulphonated emulsion of animal oils, or if that nomenclature
staggers you, ask your local dealer for a prepared leather
conditioner
that automatically penetrates leather, leaving its natural
wearing
properties vigorous and able not only to thro off abuse but
take a
polish as well. Skiboots, skating shoes beach sandals - all
footwear
will serve you longer with a bit of this easy care.
Hop a plane, refuel the convertible
or buy a fare on the rattler - but
go - have yourself a holiday this winter. We wish we could!

Ski Siesta

Caught napping here are the outfit that
ski enthusiasts consider the
most practical clothes for their sport. The drowsing figure in the upper
left hand corner wears blue downhill ski trousers, black ski boots, nave
blue shaker sweater with white collar and cuffs, checked flannel cotton
shirt, and when he is more active, a white ski cap. The other lounger
wears a grey parka with slide fastener opening, grey gabardine downhill
trousers, brown Swiss ski boots and a white Tyrolean hat with colored
cord band. At the right is a rust color lightwieght wind shirt with
slide fastener opening, made in the popular sweat shirt style, worn with
blue gabardine knickers, heavy white headband and the ski goggle visors
carried on a thong around the neck. The close-up at the left shows a new
type of cap for skiing - a sort of beret-cap combination, with peak
inside and convertible earlaps. Also shown is a zipper parka with pocket
at back of neck containing an attached hood for the bad weather.

Good-bye, Riviera!
Hello, Palm Beach!
|

It's fashion-picking time down South in a big way. What with the Riviera
blacked out, the former internationally circulating social set has
concentrated its forces along our
Southern shores. Here's a fashion first that beat the gun, so to speak
originating at Monte Carlo and subsequently cropping up all on a moonlit
night at Palm Beach. It's a formal. outfit with a flair, consisting of
white tropical weight dress trousers with a midnight blue double
breasted dinner jacket of the same lightweight fabric. The gilt buttons,
nautical but nice, are a pleasant surprise, while the lapels and tie
conservatively hew to the standard satin. The soft white silk shirt,
black silk socks and patent leather pumps are all easy-going
accessories. It's none of our business, but our artist is correct. The
ladies will wear stripes this year.

How to keep your hands warm after a cross-country trek on waxed runners
: Grasp a tall toddy high in thermal units in your left hand: sit on
your right hand. The upper reaches of the body you may adequately
insulate with warm wool, suitably distributed as shown in the diagram
above. The fuel recommended here is a colorful crew neck in red, white
and blue diamond pattern with ribbed shoulders, topped off with a blue
silk polka dot muffler. The fll length hose match the sweater, as would
be apparent at anywhere from six to sixty paces. The blue knickers are
of wind-proof gabardine, and replacing the ski boots for this postlude
session is a pair of slide-fastened sheepskin foot muffs, which in a
word-coining mood we are tempted to dub foot-ins. The lightweight
windproof ski jacket is in the closet until tomorrow. But if you can't
wait that long take another look at page 95.

This is ultra-fashionable Boca Raton, a few miles
south of Palm Beach. We
suppose the Casa Blanca is merely the place where the man with the legs
stole his towel. If he snitched the glasses as an afterthought, the
laugh is on him. You can see that from a engineering standpoint they're
put together very awkwardly. We're not so sure about the probity of the
other two men, either. Before you jump to the conclusion that nobody
would steal a pair of outfits like these, let us inform you that the
fashionable Bermuda suit at the left, for instance, is practically the
answer to a sportsman's prayer, Consisting of a single breasted coat
with large patch pockets and matching shorts in the new Colonial tan
shade, it may be worn with considerable comfort and propriety for golf,
sailing, fishing, cycling and general informal lounge occasions. No more
could you trust a fashion-conscious kleptomaniac with the India madras
shirt in bright colored plaid, the Jippi Jappa hat with handkerchief
tied hatband or the brown polished Norwegian slippers. And the same must
be said for the shirt and short combination in the new sponge color,
supplemented by a checked cotton neckertie and brown canvas rope-soled
espadrilles.
